I was thinking of it, how did you guys and gals found that institute? I don't think I'd find it without inarchunite. I truly am curious...

I was making a list of my long-term goals in life, and I decided that I wanted one of them to be to achieve physical immortality. After my list was complete, I decided it might be good to find web sites devoted to each of my goals. I put the phrase "physical immortality" into Google, and this site was among the hits that came up.

I found this place by searching for info on specific Nootropics suppliers. There were many posts indicating performance of various suppliers. As a result of this traffic nearly every major supplier in the US that sells nootropics visits this board and provides updates. Customers provide feedback on the specific suppliers and some indivudals who will not be here named also use these threads for their crusade against impure oriental and indian manufacturers.
All in all I think a very large amount of people find this place because of search engine results showing a discussion of some topic of their interest. We discuss a lot of interesting subject mattter here and that is bound to attract a lot of people from search engine, search results. |

I wasn't one of those people who believed we could achieve immortality. I thought MAYBE we could live longer, say 150 years or so. But, it wasn't until I read Ray Kurweil's book "Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever" that I started to believe it was possible.
Then purely by coincidence an article about Aubrey de Grey appeared in Popular Science. I had never heard of Aubrey before until reading Kurzweil's book (who quotes him as saying the average lifespan could be in the region of 5000 years about 100 years from now.) The Popular Science article also briefly mentioned the Immortality Institute which led me to come here in search of more Aubrey wisdom. :) |

Aye, that's really great to know Mike!
Hmmm, interesting vortexentity (what's your name again [huh] )? QUOTE We discuss a lot of interesting subject mattter here and that is bound to attract a lot of people from search engine, search results. Yes, but some think more spiritual, like mental immortality by reincarnation. [glasses] Joel, I am glad you were open-minded to change view to such. After all, I might have been a basic member still if not you... You are skeptic, and rational, ( http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?s=&...943entry56100 ) and balanced ( http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?s=&...943entry56123 )... Thank you guys. Waiting for more interesting founders... Yours truthfully ~Infernity This post has been edited by infernity: 11-Apr 2005, 03:26 PM |

I was spammed back when anonymous spamming was legal (and...as a libertarian, I see nothing wrong with spam). It was the best email I ever received.

I had the idea of physical immortality in my head for some time before I actually started researching it, perhaps all the way back to 2000. I remember in early 2002 telling a co-worker about my desires, only to be mocked in a manner I have come to expect, "Hey guys, Donnie here wants to live forever, haha."
Yeah, well at least I'm not a crazy Christian. Smuck. I actually found ImmInst through google, either by typing in life extension or immortality (can't remember which) and then searching from there. I will always remember my initial reaction when I first started browsing the site -- "Wow, I finally found you guys." :) |

I actually found it in a link from Fight Aging. I found Fight Aging from the Longevity Meme, which I found from the life-a-thon applet from the Methuselah Mouse Prize.
I found the Methuselah Mouse Prize on an article on Slashdot on June 2nd, 2004, a date I will never forget. That was the day when I first took seriously the idea that aging might be cureable, and hence that an endless life might be possible without resorting to "uploading" or cryonics. Not that those two options aren't good options when compared with death, but neither particularly seemed preferable to simply not dying. Anyway, I mostly just read articles from all the news sites aggregated by the Life-a-thon app, such as futurepundit.com and biomedcentral.com. I quickly got caught up on the genetics of calorie restriction, something that was fascinating in its implications. I was interested in several different sub-"communities" in the life extension/immortalism/transhumanism community: Singularity Institute, Extropy Institute, etc. I didn't know which to pick, and I knew I couldn't really "join" more than one and give it all my attention. Eventually, with the whole public stem cell debate, and seeing how important stem cells were to SENS, I ventured over to ImmInst to discuss the issue, and I've been a regular ever since. I got involved in promoting the idea of a Fly Prize, which got me bumped into the inner circle of ImmInst, and of course, I was just elected a Director. So I guess I'm here to stay! |

Oh Don, I feel much rapport to you know when you say this [bl:)]
I got new comments, terribly stupid by a devil-boy: "I also don't wanna die [>] I don't want you to put me in the freezer [they referred to cryonics], hahaha" [If you won't shut-up I'll lock you in the freezer now while being alive, I heard some people wanna taste ice-cream - meat flavor, wanna contribute?] "Oh Adi, please come to the annual school trip, there are streams and fountainheads over there, haha they do there cryonics!" [ [sfty] can I ask you something? why are you using terms which you don't know what's their meaning?] Never mind, I won't continue the low comments... Glad you found it Don, and I am glad you sought for it. Yours truthfully ~Infernity |

Oh that's great Jay, I understand you've been through lots of life extension sites, communities and institutes.
That's truly great to have you here in particular as a Director! [!:)] and especially after I've seen the beautiful comment on the April fools day joke :) [sweat] Yours truthfully ~Infernity |

Mind,
What kind of spam was it? Forwarded from a friend or "pr0n for j00" spam? I typed immortality in google. It seems like we're all adding some history so I'll go ahead. I concider myself a logician (And really, all of humanity) by trade. I wondered what to do with my life and weighed the importance and cause of happiness, eventually finding it to be inferior to truth. So I decided to answer the question of "what is life?" and figured I'd need to live longer to do so. So here I am. This post has been edited by jaguar: 19-Aug 2005, 09:49 PM |

I have been interested for some time now about life extension and the possibility of immortality. I only recently decided to act on this, and so I joined your group. (A basic member for now, but we'll see...)
I too have suffered ridicule when divulging my ideas to others. Perhaps they were entirely the wrong people to confide in. Those who treat others in such ways are not meant for immortality. |
