It seems that folks vested in the idea of cryonics for themselves need to have a place to live together for safety, support and convenience. Is there such a place? Can we create one?

The only place I am aware of is in and around the Pheonix Arizona (Alcor) area. Many cryonicists live there. There is also a large transhumaist group in Tuscon, not too far away. There might be a higher density of cryonicists around Clinton township Michigan as well. (CI)

Jordan Sparks has plans to open a cryo storage facility, but the economics of ln2 dictate that it is expensive in small quantities, so that hasn't materialized yet. I expect it will within a decade or so. We've had some talk about offering chemical preservation as an alternative option, as that is dramatically less costly on a small scale -- but if you aren't seriously scraping the bottom, low-temperature (with prompt high-quality stabilization) is still the way to go. There are also plans for a training in Portland around June I believe, which were discussed at the Bedford Day meetup. Anyone looking to move to a good cryonics place might consider oregon if they like the northwest and are okay with rainy weather. We have several sane, friendly cryonicists, including Aschwin de Wolf, Chana de Wolf, Carlos Mondragon, and Jordan Sparks. Oregon has a "death with dignity" law protecting your ability to end your life and to be given medications to do so, provided you are deathly ill. But this hasn't been tested for cryonics, and is of dubious value anyway. (You would only ever want to do premortem cryonics if you had a life-threatening neurological condition that might erase part of your memories.) It could however be a sign of a mindset that lets you do what you like with your [supposed] end of life. |

Have you heard of the Timeship project? When completed, this will be very cool indeed (if you'll pardon the pun): www.timeship.org |

This has been discussed in various forms by various people - but nothing has taken off. I have an online group which has this as one of the long term goals: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tradecommunity/ The short term goal of the group would be networking with the intention of building trust, form business relationships etc. all this as a precursor to forming a community for the long term. The primary aspect that I have emphasised on is the money/commercial angle - people cannot just move to a place if that angle is ignored. This post has been edited by dennis: Feb 1 2010, 02:28 AM |
