No EPA's (such as fish oil)? Is this because you get enough omega 3's from your diet already?

I haven't heard of se-methylsenenocysteine or Aniracetam. I'll have to look into those. Any links you have handy?

My top 10 is my current list of suppplements that I feel are inispensible. In time and with different health concerns I will likely change them. I do get EFAs from my diet. The niacin is actually not so much for myself, but as I have seen the amazing changes it can bring about in schizophrenic individuals it is definitely one of my all time top 10.

As far as the se-methylsenenocysteine goes, try a site search at vrp.com and lef.org, and click on "SeMC" under advanced series at aor.ca. They all have articles on this form of selenium. For aniracetam, try a google search.

My personal favorites are the heavy hitters 3 of which have extended maximum lifespan in vivo in animals.

1. metformin ( anti- glycation agent), receptor sensetizer, CR mimetic.

2. NtBHA , extremely powerful spin trap, anti- glycator, extended life in vivo.

3.R-lipoic acid.

4. Acetyl-L-carnosine.

5.idebenone

6.amminoguanidine

7.ALT-711

8. MYO-029

9.Oxiracetam

10. ALCAR

I am eagerly anticipating sites like this one http://www.cytoritx..../technology.htm coming out with their product for commercial use. amongst others :) It has been my dream for years to make money by helping to start a company similar to that one and help change the world at the same time [thumb]

1) multi (preferably Ortho-core or LE mix)
2) epa/dha (2-6g depending on personal circumstances)
3) tumeric (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticarcinogen)
4) green tea
5) acetyl-l-carnitine
6) R-ALA
7) NAC
8) ginkgo (as an antioxidant, only a mediocre nootropic at best)
9) hydergine or vinpocetine
10) s-AME

The list is approximate order. I am tempted to replace ginkgo with provigil for quality of life.

Isn't there a risk of copper toxicity from ALA. It's supposed to significantly reduce copper excretion from bile.

What do you think about its use in the treatment of wilson's disease?

Well it actually increases copper excretion from urine and intestinal excretion but significantly reduces copper excretion from bile. Since people with wilson's excrete no copper from bile it's actually useful to them.

I guess in a healthy person there isn't much risk of copper toxicity.

Edit (cnorwood): Fixed quote bug

Interesting about the Wilson's Disease, I have low body temp but thyroid levels continually screened as normal. So maybe this would help me then, cuz I dunno anything else that helps raise my body temp except execise. It's frustrating.

Why assume that one size fits all i.e. that the same 10 fit everyone? e.g. top 10 for...

20 year old college student--minimally active

30 year old runner

30 year old CRON (i.e. calorie restriction...)...not veggie

30 year old veggie

ancient geezer (like moi)....

No family history....

vs family history cancer

vs family history heart disease...

gotta individualize

While it's true that you must individualize there are certainly a basic set of supplements that are good for just about everyone. It's good to know what those basic supplements are.

>>> gotta individualize

True, but I think you can start with a base that is good for everyone over 20. My top 12 list is such an attempt. Realistically, there should be about 20 supps in the base, but I know cost becomes a serious factor. My list will cost about $4000-5000 a year.

How much do people spend on supplements? I remember when all my vitamins and supps cost less than 25 cents a day and I thought I had a very good program. Costs have gone up some but now I'm taking many more things and it's costing me over a grand a year. I keep hearing about things I just have to have like resveratrol and so on. I just ordered benfotiamine which sounds like a very important compound that people will appreciate more later on as the facts come out. I save lots of money capping much of my own stuff but I still spend plenty. I bet some people spend many times what I spend.

How much do you spend a year on health stuff?

I spend $150 a month or $1800 a year. If I take this regimen for the next 50 years, with costs keeping up with inflation, it will cost $90,000. This is well below the extra productivity I expect to get from taking these preventative health measures. I am also not taking into account the money I save on health insurance (as unlike many, I just get very high deductible insurance in case of disaster or chronic illness) and other medical bills. Even if it did not make economic sense, I value my health enough that I would pay it. As my income goes up, I see the amount I am willing to spend on health going up even faster.

Edit: added the phrase "and other medical bills"

I agree with cnorwood about the costs being worth it. Every (validated) supplement I add to my regimen is preventing damage to my body that is irreversible. This soft lump of flesh called the body is the only thing that keeps my consciousness going. So yeah, every penny I spend is worth it. Right now it's at least $150 per month. It will go up in the future.

Well, the brain does play a significant role too, but that's pretty well bloody obvious.
