The graph has a logarithmic horizontal scale, this allows a visual display of all participants scores. Log graphs are convenient when the data has a wide dynamic range (ie small values in the presence of large values). If a linear scale were used then many scores would be very near the left axis and be essentially unreadable.I think the graph is very misleading. As it increment in 10x, ...
Yes, log graphs can evoke this illusion. The graphical display portion (horizontal bars) can be misleading if not correctly interpreted. But the actual score numbers are there to help clarify....so it looks like a lot of people are very close when they aren't
Features of graphs such as you noted here have long been used in comparisons to make something appear to either have an advantage, or not.
The combination of statistics and graphs can be tricky!

Of course I accept the academy's praise and want to thank the little people.
Those cats in the lollipop guild really inspire me to greatness.
-oh and movie stars were responsible for the civil rights movement in the 60's.
