reading so much positive about magnesium supplementation, especially to help with anxiety, i was going to buy some, but i found a multivitamin at home which has 250mg magnesium (elemental). is this enough? or of the right kind? basically, should i buy magnesium separately or just take this multivitamin while i have it?

It's probably oxide, so it may not absorb very well.
Also, it's likely to have stuff like Iron and Calcium which you don't really want and other random stuff ...

250 mg would be a decent start, but get a Mag supplement.
Malate, Glycinate, Ascorbate, Citrate, etc.

Depends on the multi. Most multivitamins use magnesium oxide, because it takes up far less space than other forms. However, the bioavailability of the oxide is not great. IIRC it's in the low 20's, though internet lore has it a lot worse than that. Regardless, the anti-anxiety property is probably only going to be operative if you have an extreme deficiency. You can give it a shot, but I wouldn't expect miracles.

you will probably need more as 250mg isnt even 100% DRI. 400-600mg would probably be better...

look into kava for anxiety... that stuff was a miracle for me

I've found magnesium supplements to be tricky.
Some have poor absorption and induce oxidation (MgO), some cause apathy and orthostatic hypotension (MgCitrate).
In my experience Mg Orotate works the best.

Do what and why?

Magnesium glycinate 360 mg daily (120 mg caps x 3) is what I take and eating foods rich in this important mineral probably brings it up to at least 500 mg.

What brand of magnesium glycinate do you take? Also is the 120 mg elemental magnesium?

I would just go with Bluebonnet Mag Glyc. It comes in 200mg capsules and is probably cheaper than pure encap.

Yeah, I think I'll try the Bluebonnet brand. But many of these magnesium supplements do not specify how much elemental magnesium there is in each serving. You usually have to contact the company to find out. Why can't thy provide this info on the bottle? Here's a nice link about magnesium basics......

If you look here, it tells you it's 200mg elemental magnesium.

Perfect!. All mag supplements should specify this. Thanks.....
