About since the age of 16 I've been "suffering" from bags under my eyes.
I've tryed some of the common house methods to deal with them, but with no meaningfull succes.
- Cucumber slices applied on the skin,
- Patato slices applied on the skin,
- Cooling of the skin around my eyes locally.

Nothing works, maybe the cooling has some slight effect, but that's all. The scientiffic approach did not yield any result either; I'm not going to try surgery, which appears to be the only described solution at e.g. pubmed.

Last week I decided to grab the cow by it's horns, but still did not find them...

Any idea's?

First step is to isolate whether the puffiness/bags under your eyes are the result of a medical condition i.e sinus problem or allergy.

The puffiness under your eyes is most likely fluid trapped under your eyes/ water retention.

Eyes creams/gels/serums containing caffeine are said to help tighten skin around the eyes and to reduce puffiness. The problem with eye treatments is that they are very very expensive. I posted an article in the Skin Science section
here that looked at a product containing human growth factors as well as caffeine. Have a read.

Here's a reasonbly priced eye cream that contains both epidermal growth factors as well as caffeine that sells for US$17.50 for 0;l5 fl. oz as opposed to US$80 for 0.5 fl.ox for the product in the quote study. Virtually the same product

Hey, thanks! I will try the stuff, wouldn't hurt I guess. In the meantime I will try to find some more facts regarding probable causes. I suspect it has something to do with allergies so I will take a low dose cetirizine (anti-histamine) for a couple of days as a general test if alleviated histamine levels due to allergy could play a role.

It's fluctuating and has nothing to do with sleep quality or quantity.

It may take more than a couple days/low dose to see an effect if it is an allergic problem. I've been very satisfied with the results of skin tests to identify the common allergens that I'm sensitive to. I've found that they are kind of a binary tool - you either react or you don't, and the intensity of the reaction is not necessarily related to the level of symptoms you are experiencing. For me and two other members of my family, immunotherapy was the real fix. You may find that you need a nasal steroid spray.

if it is allergy related, then it shouldn't be a problem for to long as there are very effective cures already in the pipeline that could be available within the next 12-18 months. Trials have shown 100 fold improvement for those suffering things like dust, pollen allergies etc etc...

Steroid nasal sprays are quite good though, and they only 'marginally' increase the risk of more colds.

Matt, what's on the horizon? Sounds interesting.

I'm inclined to think that it's small-scale water retention,
just like in other parts of a puffy face (e.g. at morning).

In any case, sauna should work fine (for until a few days after).
Around 90C heat, 3-5 x 10 minutes each. I know I have a slow
metabolism (which is not a bad thing LE-wise) which can cause face
puffiness, making one look older. I really don't look old, but after
sauna treatment, I'm back to around 18-ish, which should be mostly
due to reduced puffiness/water. Another possibility could be excess/
imbalance in subdermal mucopolysaccharides, which is also known
to be caused by slow metabolism (but not degenerative/aging per se).

I've been told vitamin K-based eye creams
help with problems like these, though I haven't
tried them yet.

I have eye bags all my life too, at least partly
attributed to my allergic predisposition.

You could try one of these.

I've tried a few Vitamin K topicals- no effect I could discern, and, judging from user reviews of similar products, my results were not unusual.

Hi,
I used to get bags under my eyes all the time mostly due to my inability to fall asleep easily. I would stay up late thinking about something then wake up early next morning only to see little bags under my eyes. I somehow managed to kick the habit of staying up late but my eye bags wouldn't go away.I then recently read an article about a woman who supposedly got rid of her eye bags using a particular eye care product. I tried it and it worked really well. I got rid of my eye bags in 3 weeks. You can read more about the lady's article at the link below

try tea bags, after you drink tea, put them on top of your eyelid like some old women put sliced cucumbers on their eyes, thin slices ,

heard they work, but don't want to freak my roommates out, if they think i'm gay

I think it has different causes because I have had puffy under eyes since before I could walk. and later turned darker. I think the smarter one is the more likely they will have those.
