Hi,

Before I begin my rant please understand I am a very health conscious person and when I'm not partying I take care of my diet/fitness/adequate vitamin intake etc very well.

;) Here goes... I suffer insomnia from time to time and most recently severe anxiety.

For the last couple of years I've been prescribed Zopiclone for the insomnia; however recently I've started abusing it. I actually went through 30 X 7.5mg pills in a week. I guess that may be the obviously reason why I've been getting the bad anxiety. I am nearly out of Zopiclone now so I will stop these by New Years Eve. Forgot to mention there was the one off Valium & Temazepam abuse also very recently.

For the last couple of years I've been taking street MDMA once every couple months on average. But recently I've had 1 every couple of weeks for the last couple of months. I plan to be clean from MDMA next year (serious New Years resolution). So it would be safe to guess I'm fairly low in serotonin?

This also badly affects my concentration at work, memory has been a lot worse and my energy levels are sometimes low. However I can't take anything that would increase anxiety.

I'm beginning to look into ways I can boost my levels of GABA and Serotonin (without taking SSRIs or Tricyclics).
I've tried:
5HTP - good
Theanine - yuck
Picamilon - very mild, but definite improvement
Inositol - I think it works nicely but only after weeks of taking it & higher doses
Ashwagandha - didn't notice any effects

Could anyone please advise or recommend supplements?
I would greatly appreciate any help!

Cheers :)
A

Theanine, Inositol and Ashwagandha are individually pretty mild but the combination might be enough to relieve anxiety during the acute phase of withdrawal from the GABAergic drugs. I would actually not recommend 5-HTP in this situation because beyond the initial replacement of depleted serotonin immediately after (within a week or two) MDMA use, 5-HTP seems to produce elevated serotonin levels that desensitize serotonin receptors and would be counterproductive. Honestly, I would stop worrying about "what to take" and just give your poor serotonin and GABA systems a break. They will sort themselves out given time and freedom from drug bombardment.

For Serotonin support a good basic combo is:

St. John's Wart - Natural SSRI. Take sparingly.

L-Tryptophan - Amino Acid in food that your body makes into 5-HTP and then into Serotonin. Longer lasting and gentler than 5-HTP and less likely to screw up your stomach.

For Gaba:

Bacopa helps some with the anxiety and brain repair w/gaba issues too.

Piracetam and Rhodiola are good for anxiety too.

Please don't take any more illegal drugs. You're just frying your brain... As someone who has suffered from depression throughout my life for no good reason except crappy brain chemistry: it totally f'in sucks...

Take care of your serotonin receptors please!

You might want to look into Tianeptine (Selective serotonin reuptake accelerator/enhancer)

Procaine GH3 seems to boost NGF, and has mild maoi properties as well as cortisol reducing effects (which should brighten your mood)
