A beauty pageant for life extension. It may sound strange, but they have those things for causes such as animal rights. It brings a lot of attention - some unwanted - to the mainstream. Beauty pageants have fallen out of favor recently, mosty because I think that they don't have a compelling enough reason for their existence because beauty in of itself is found on so many other outlets such as talk shows, the evening news and telemundo *snicker*. But with a compelling social message people may tune in to see just what kind of female contestants the cause is able to attract. Also this may attract some more female endorsers to the Internet groups since individualistic males are as of now predominant on the site. Who wouldn't mind a larger female presence to converse/network with? Think of it, the beauty of the contestants could be sold as to what life extension is aiming for. That could help with some of the sponsors, I'm thinking anti-wrinkle creams and vitamins. The crowned winner could receive a free cryonic agreement?!

I certainly wouldn't mind, but I am thinking that those who are huge women's rights supporters and activists might have a problem with the idea. (not that I do not support "women's rights", just that the anti-objectification of women sentiment is a big priority to some women's rights groups)

Unfortunately, most people think of life extension as turning back the superficial clock. (and will become consumers of life extension technologies based on the desire to look younger and more fit) A beauty pageant would appeal to this type of a crowd, I think. I am not sure how many of these types of people would be far-sighted enough to support life extension at this stage, though.

It is an interesting idea. I like your thought process here. Some of the things Nate brings up are legit concerns, however, some things could be tweaked....maybe the contest could be for what women have the best aging biomarkers (who incidently are usually very good looking). Maybe it could be based on how large of a percentage their biological age is less than their chronological age. Just thinking out loud.

I was thinking, actually, of different age categories. Older women are as much part of the habitat as young. Also you could have one for, eh, men just to turn the volume down on some of the knee jerk activists. I wouldn't worry too much about the activists, many pageants are held around the world with barely a wimper. Realistically the activists only jump on successful pageants with obsessive fan bases. The reason I think that a pagent is a good idea is because it typically cements a specific market's appeal. I mean they have biker pageants, lesbian pageants, state pageants, pagents for kids, dogs etc... If successful there are also ancillary products such as calenders, behind the scenes DVDs, fashion lines, website clicks and of course the crowned spokesperson. Kind of like a brainy Hawaiian Tropic. But the attractive contestants will represent the life extension/preventative medicine ideal. The office I work in has many attractive moms and we were thinking of running a pageant for a diabetes cause but it was canned because of sexual harassment concerns. But a pageant based off of a concept from a volunteer organization is fine. On top of that pageants are kind of cheap, you send out the word, rent a place, audition people, get a flyer at the local paper and the novelty effect makes it a news story.

I think a version of this basic idea could be doable without having to undergo the real effort required of a full blown beauty pageant. What about a calender instead?

I also think there should be two versions of the calender representing the primary gender orientations. The alternative orientations can buy either or both calenders if they are so inclined. I also think the images should have a science and H+ overtone reminiscent of Natasha Vita Moore's work.

The twelve images chosen for each calender would be through a competition here among all the members and they can submit up to twelve images each to be voted individually on by all the members in stages to reduce their number to manageable level incrementally. The images must be free of copyright restriction to be eligible and they could be *soft sexual*, hi-tech, social, pure art or a combination of subjects. The contest winners would receive a prize based on some benefits and some cash. The calenders would then be distributed for sale online but also as sign-up awards and the 2009 version would be made available at the planned conference. Full members might even have access to past calenders as a free download.

It is late in the game to undergo this process for 2008 but it is not too late to initiate a 2009 calender project and some carefully placed sponsorships could also be used as additional revenue sources once the basic document is created . Each page could have a unique and discrete sponsor ad that *bid* for through a silent auction process among our client list and others. This would not only create a constant presentation of our organization for some time to come but also promote our select sponsors and these could include other H+ organizations.

Also I think a well crafted calender could have at least 3 or 4 formats, a small magnet fridge type, a standard wall size, a desk top and a limited edition high quality glossy oversize.

A beauty pageant is a one time affair, and generally forgotten a day later but a calender lasts a year and good calenders are collectibles.

I also think we could get crafty and develop a format that can be woven into digital formats and become a part of online and smart phone electronic planners.

I didn't realize we/you had the capability. Calendars are pretty charming, and we could distribute them to regular posters as a nice incentive. Lulu.com can generate the custom calenders.

Sounds good. But what company do we use to find the sponsors? Now that I think of it I haven't seen a single banner ad on this site! How do you keep the wheels turing?

The real question, as always, is attracting the attention of the outside world. We could draw in new users to the site through affiliate banners promoting the contest and showcasing potential contestants? An affiliate program would probably work, but costs some healthy bucks upfront. As you know there are sooo many specialty sites out there that target advertising might erroneously concentrate on. The only reason I suggested a pageant was because I figured it'd be cheap and attract the attention of news cameras, like how a runway show does. Obviously the pageants are completely forgettable, the only contestants I can remember off hand are the ones that acted out of character, like the girl who flubbed in the Miss Teen USA, and Vanessa Williams. All pageants are the same, but the reason why the contest is held is most important. Also do we have enough courageous guys and (esp.) gals comming here to compete for a chance in a calender for Mr. and Mrs. Calorie Restriction 2009? We'd need to get featured on Rocketboom.

Also maybe the ceremony of a pageant would be a good opportunity to debut a theme song for Immortality, like how the Olympics has theirs... I do have Sony Acid music software hmmm...

Unless you have banners blocked, you should see one at the top of the screen. (in the forums that are currently sponsored by companies) Also, donations, and membership dues for those that choose to be full members help with the costs for the site upkeep and the projects we do.

I see. The banners were so unobtrusive I never noticed.

beauty pageant *sigh...* I kind of walked away from that culture as a teen, because of the inherent problems with how it makes those not 'chosen' feel--and the message it sends to young women...

I do think it would be fun to have a picture of me done, ala Natasha's 'transhumanist touch' --I'm sure she'd do that if I ask her, and we are actually putting a calendar together.

Please weigh in here Shannon where I bring up the calender idea formally.

Also tell us there a bit more about the calender project that you and Natasha have.

Natasha and I, do not have a calendar project. I was saying that I'm sure she'd help do art on a photo of me, in her transhumanist art style-- that is if we here at ImmInst are going to do a calendar. Yes, I'll read over the calendar thread, thanks :)
