I get mine from Beyond a Century. It is bioastin as well.

If I recall correctly, they sell AstaREAL beadlets.

AstaREAL doesn't look like a bad brand of astaxanthin to me. It's derived from the same microalgae as BioAstin is. I would be more worried about absorption with those beadlets due to the low amount of lipids.

Anyone tried high dose (> 12mg a day) astaxanthin? Anyone noticed the endurance effect that this guy did? I'm skeptical he is just trying to pimp some products...

http://www.naturalnews.com/023177.html

"Previously, I was only taking 2mg - 4mg per day. But for a while now, I've been taking 16mg per day (400% more than before), and I've discovered something truly astounding: The health benefits of this natural medicine keep increasing as the dose increases (to a limit, of course). I've found that 16mg a day is the ideal dosage for me to experience maximum benefits from this supplement... benefits that include outstanding athletic performance, a significant reduction in muscle soreness and joint pain, radical improvements in resistance to UV sun exposure, stabilized blood sugar and many more."

I have been taking 16MG bioastin astaxanthin for a few months now. I have totally noticed an effect from it. not so much endurance but muscle recovery. I can run for a longer period without the soreness i would normally have. I checked out that link and it does sound like he has some sort of benefit even though he says he doesnt.

This product does NOT color your poop. the guy that posted that comment either doesnt really take it or has other serious health issues. I take it and my husband has been taking it for almost a year and have NEVER had pink colored poop. LOL We also take spirulina (green algae). so technically i should be having pink and green poop right!! ha ha ha

I have read of the NOW brand by iherbs but prefer the real stuff not a relabeled brand. iherbs also offers its customers a kickback if they refer people back which i think is peculiar. (talk about pimping!)

where are you getting your bioastin? i usually get it from ebay, the price there seems to be reasonable.
I found a really good free pdf on astaxanthin on this site called bioastinman too. something to check out, it has a lot of good info.

Interesting thanks for sharing your high dose Astaxanthin experience runner30. I assume you know to take all 16 mg with some fat to enhance absorption.

Have you noticed your skin colour to be any different as a result of the supplementation? Any changes at all in your skin (perhaps smoother or less 'wrinkly')? Have you noticed radical improvements in resistance to UV sun exposure?

I think astaxanthin is a very expensive supplement when price/gram is considered. I am puzzled by this because astaxanthin is an animal feed product. It is coloring all the farm raised salmon I see in the supermarket. And coloring the flamingoes at the zoo. It's basic cost must be very low to be used as animal feed, so why is it so special and expensive as a supplement? It must be a monopoly pricing situation, but how? Is it patents? It's very strange, even BAC in bulk does not offer significant price savings.

Possibly the kind given to animals is not refined or has high potency.

I take 10mg a day, Now brand. Have no idea if it helps -- I've read a lot of mixed things about it, and wish their were more studies.

There is a different from synthetic astaxanthin and real astaxanthin. The synthetic variety doesn't have nearly as good as free-radical scavenging effects as the real deal. The coloring is the synthetic variety of astaxanthin and not what we take in supplement form.

Astaxanthin is very powerful is that it doesn't need to be taking in the extreme quantities as do other supplements.

It is so special because it is probably the best supplement one could take for their health. Go do a pubmed search on it, and you will see why. It's incredible stuff and come to think of it, I haven't had a sunburn since taking it, and I live in the valley of the sun.

As lov2increase said, Astaxanthin comes in two forms - natural and synthetic. The synthetic variety manufactured by DSM(Hoffmann La Roche) and BASF is considerably cheaper and is the form generally used in animal feed. Astaxanthin is composed of 3 stereoisomers in varying ratios. The difference between synthetic and natural is in proportion of the stereoisomers.

I guess natural Astaxanthin is expensive because of the cost associated with growing haemotococcus and use of supercritical/CO2 extraction.

You can get feed grade astaxanthin rich algae meal (NatuRose) from various places. This is made by Cyanotech, just like BioAstin. It's cheaper than BioAstin, but is not meant for human consumption.

AFAIK, NOW Foods has an excellent record of quality assurance and rigorous testing and verification of their products.

I concur. Probably 75% of my supplements which are not in bulk form are Now Foods Brand. They are an excellent company indeed!

Apparently the cost is high growing haemotococcus, because Cyanotech dropped its production of feed stock. Cyanotech had trouble with sugar price controls. Thanks sdxl and RoadToAwe for your
comments. India and China are entering the. market, maybe the price will drop.

Anyone using high dose Astaxanthin?

I'm using relatively high dose Astaxanthin (around 12mg or so daily) plus high dose lutein and zeaxanthin.

Not sure if it's doing much in terms of noticeable benefits, although my skin looks great. Cartenoids will do that to ya..

I tried 12 mg/ day Astaxanthin for a while - didn't notice any benefits, & so dropped back to 4 mg/day.
Also take a lycopene product (derived from tomatoes & has some other carotenes in it), lutein, & zeaxanthin.

These things give my cheeks a ruddy/ healthy colouring.
