Louis Farrakhan the Nation of Islam Leader Calls Barack Obama the messiah on October 8th, 2008!

Why would the leader of the Nation of Islam call Obama the messiah if Obama is not a Muslim, and Muslims only think the messiah will be a Muslim? Does anyone care to give any explanations for this?

(fixed the spelling of undecided for you. -- maxwatt)

I'll move my reply intended for the other thread here since there is a dedicated is a dedicated thread now.

Farrakhan is no more "the Muslim leader" than David Koresh was "the Christian leader". NOI started in the 1930's and claimed their human leader was God reborn. Shia and Sunni Muslims(who comprise a billion compared to NOI's thousands) consider this extreme blasphemy. They don't consider Farrakhan a real Muslim let alone their leader and have issued a fatwa against him. Anyway, as I said, Shia and Sunnis wouldn't call Obama the messiah because Obama is a Christian. Even if you want to veer into conspiracy theorist territory, Obama calls himself a Christian, and that alone would make it extreme blasphemy for a Muslim to call him the messiah. For a Muslim to call Obama the messiah would be like a Baptist calling a Muslim Christ reborn.

Edit: Farrakhan's reason for this endorsement is racial/political not religious. I doubt Farrakhan cares what the Quran says, but he's a black nationalist and he would be happy to see any black man as president.

The poll has a bad question.

Question should read: Is Obama the messiah?

Islamic doctrine holds that the son of a Muslim is a Muslim, and cannot renounce the faith. No Muslim can renounce Islam on pain of death under a literal interpretation Islamic law. If Obama were to renounce Islam with any credibility, he could become the object of a fatwa calling for his death. Yet Obama wholeheartedly professes Christianity, and joined a prominent Black Church in Chicago to connect with the community. (Hey, Reverend Wright was only saying what many black people are thinking.) I doubt that Obama believes the theological baggage that comes with any religion. Richard Dawkins claims few if any people with an IQ over 130 are actually religious -- if they claim otherwise, as many in the United States do, they are at heart being opportunistic for social reasons.

Rosa Brooks wrote a piece in the LA Times titled He's Barack Obama, not the messiah which was amusing.

Thank God I am an atheist.

Yeah like Obama.

It's easy to believe he and his wife both hate America. That's why he wants to change it into something we'll all hate.

The Socialist United States of America.

Luv, I can't believe you are still clinging to this ridiculous "Obama is a closet Muslim" meme. Is this "poll" supposed to make you look open minded? Here are some other questions you should include:

Is Obama the anti-Christ?

Is Dick Cheney the anti-Christ?

Did humans hang out with dinosaurs 6000 years ago, as the Flintstones prophesied?

Too late for that. George Bush and Hank Paulson beat him to it.

It can get worse.

All kidding aside. Obama is the scariest guy in my lifetime running for president. People from both sides of the political spectrum refer to him as the Messiah. Republicans do it just to make fun of him, but the people on the left doing it are insane. Almost all of the enemy's of America are hoping Obama wins the election, because they think it will be the end of America. This should be a red flag (no pun intended) to all Americans.

Because Farrakhan is a nut...even bigger than Rev. Wright.

Obama is to the political right of nearly every other country in the Western world, including Canada and our staunch ally England. The entire Western world outside the US hasn't turned into some kind of Soviet hell hole, so there's no need to panic just because someone to the left of Sean Hannity is about to be elected president.
