OK guys, this is not yet an official project, but I'm hoping that it will be and I'll be able to post a more refined thread in the projects forum. My goal in posting this thread is two-fold. First of all, I want this to be an initial central location so people can report back with their successes and issues with trying to implement this plan. Secondly, I'm looking for suggestions about how to improve on these ideas so that they can be made more effective.

I've already heard from brokenportal about past successes with this sort of strategy. I'm hoping he'll show up and post some stories. FunkOdyssey has told me about using this method to promote imminst as well.

So the basic idea is to go to other forums related to imminst, and lurk in them to try to spot threads related to imminst topics, and ideally find people who would like to become a part of imminst.

Here are the examples of topics and forums where we could start lurking:
Philosophy (http://forums.philosophyforums.com/)
Science (http://www.sciencefo...forum/index.php)
Artificial Intelligence (http://www.ai-forum.....asp?forum_id=1)
Health
Medicine
Technology
Life Extension

This is just a quick list I threw together, but like I said I'm looking for more suggestions to add onto this list of either other more topics or more forums related to these topics.

I'm going to start at the Philosophy forum, because I think they might be the most open-minded. I'm going to post updates as I go along. I'm basically learning as I go. My hope is that if at least 2-3 imminst-ers are replying to threads in a single forum, we can inspire some change and get people to start asking questions.

Well... I'm off. I hope to hear feedback about this soon and I'll post my results as soon as I have some.

EDIT:

I've decided I'm going to start putting together a list of sub-topics in these forums that seem similar to those already in imminst... I see these as having a lot of potential and incentive for us to post in. Here it goes...

AI Forums:

"Could AI turn against humanity?" - http://www.ai-forum....;topic_id=67267

Philosophy Forums:

"The Future of Humanity" - http://forums.philos...nity-32635.html
"The Matrix Film. is that possible?" - http://forums.philos...ible-32860.html
"Can a machine know?" - http://forums.philos...know-17205.html

That's all for now. I'm sure I'll add to this list soon enough though. Please feel free to go lurking and reply to this thread with topics that you find interesting.

I love your idea. Tell us the result, and maybe create teams. This will bring us out of our digital treehouse too and see other perspectives. Many members are active on other forums.

I'm on Alcor United and MF forum sometimes

Nootropics is ~our biggest subforum, and many places discuss sim things, like MetaBrain forums. Science, religious, philosophy, Business/economy/Money forums are popular on web

I found a thread that looks promising. It's in the Philosophy forum titled "The Future of Humanity." http://forums.philos...nity-32635.html

I already posted a reply. Now I'm just gonna wait and hope I'll get a chance to drop the imminst url ;)

Youve got the exact right idea and exact right motivation for the internetworking team. Its on line 39 of leeep. Ive been thinking some more about what your saying about going to other forums, I think it will fit right in to the list of things that are already on the team which are to list or create digg, blog, twine and youtube links that have something to do with the cause. Im going to add "outside forum topics" to it. Thats a great idea. We can also start or find topics related to the cause in any forum we can find and then list them too. The point of the lists is so that team members and anybody at imminst can go to the list, which will be in the imminst wiki, and click any random topics they have time for and do any of a variety of things to them, digg them, comment on them, twine them etc...

Here's another idea.

If you don't have a home page, how about using imminst.org as your home page.
This is when commenting on any blog/forum whatever.

That should generate a little bit of traffic for ImmInst
And do something for the search ranking too, perhaps.

Anything related to atheism, futurism, or rationality would be good places to do this as well. I try to come up with some concrete places

Good idea. I'll add those topics to the list. If you find specific forums I'll add those too. So far, there hasn't been a reply to my post in the philosophy forums. I'll try to spread my activity out a bit more probably tomorrow.

EDIT: Is there a time limit on how long you have to edit a post? Because I can't seem to edit the starting post anymore...

OK, so I found out that there's a 12 hour time limit on editing posts, so I'll just have to make a new reply with updates. So here's my first one:

Potential "hot" forums found so far:

Philosophy Forums (http://forums.philosophyforums.com/)

Threads:

"The Future of Humanity" - http://forums.philos...nity-32635.html
"The Matrix Film. is that possible?" - http://forums.philos...ible-32860.html
"Can a machine know?" - http://forums.philos...know-17205.html
"The Potential of Science" - http://forums.philos...ence-32563.html

Artificial Intelligence (http://www.ai-forum.....asp?forum_id=1)

Threads:

"Could AI turn against humanity?" - http://www.ai-forum....;topic_id=67267

Science (http://www.sciencefo...forum/index.php)

No threads found so far...

Other forum topics that we have yet to find specific forums about:

Atheism
Futurism
Rationality
Health
Medicine
Technology
Life Extension

So it looks like this topic is going to join forces with the larger "internetworking" project. You can view the details about it here: http://www.imminst.o...networking_Team

I'll keep the forums section updated with whatever threads we find in other forums. Keep up the work. Thanks rwac for the health forums addition.

I am a member of a message board with 40,000 members. It is a message board for stock market investors. Investors willing to pour money into companies who show promising futures. So with that, I have posted a couple threads on Imminst already asking a few preliminary questions.

This project itself isn't exactly a money-generating project, although I believe it will fuel membership and enthusiasm if done correctly. The real money-makers are going to be nanotechnology and various other medical technologies that are being developed. I'd also add to the list quantum computing, although that's more of a long shot. I'm not really the person to ask about these specific technologies. Like I said this project is about membership and promotion, which should indirectly help all aspects of the cause.

If you have any specific questions I'd be glad to answer them the best I can or direct you to someone who can.

I'm making interesting progress in one of the threads posted above. What I feel I need from the "higher-ups" around here is more reference material to post, such as videos articles, etc. I need concrete things to show people to get them excited about the singularity and radical life extension. I think I'm going to post a thread related directly to this need.

I'm bumping this for a couple reasons. There are a few more threads that have been added to the list. Also, I'm trying to see who would be interested in being on an official project team with me. Basically we could use the help right now in posting in these threads. There are a few promising ones, especially in the AI forum. The other objective of the team is to find more forums and threads having to do with these topics as rwac has done.

Here is the most updated list of forums/topics that we have. I've posted only a thread on the philosophy forums called "The Future of Humanity."

http://www.imminst.o...ing_Team#Forums

Feel free to start accounts on these forums and start posting like you would on imminst. If you're interested in becoming an official project member, then reply here or PM me. The ball is starting to get rolling on this and what we need most are people.

So we've got a couple of interesting threads that brokenportal and I have started to reply to. These two are the most promising ones so far:

http://www.sciencefo...ead.php?t=38084

http://www.sciencefo...read.php?t=8226

There is also an entire forum dedicated to singularity that seems to have just started up. It was referenced in the AI forum I found here: http://www.ai-forum....;topic_id=67507

The forum url is here: http://www.singularityforums.com/

If you guys are really serious about this project, then please come help us out. Reply to these threads or find other to reply to. Or you could even start your own topics.
