You guys might have heard the story last week of a young lady from England who died from an allergic reaction to the injection of the experimental drug B71. This drug is being developed to treat cancer/diabetes etc and she was using it to slow aging. I haven't been able to find information on the drug, but we can easily guess is that it's a sirt activator like resveratrol or sirt1720. :|w

This got me thinking. Would it be possible to develop an allergy to resveratrol, simply by taking it everyday? I take mine bucally, would this reduce the possibility of an allergy since the immune system is located in the gut, or increase it since blood levels are much higher? It would be terrible to become allergic to something so beneficial.

Any experts want to chime in?

-thanks

I don't think there's much danger. B71 was a protein, so an allergic reaction is not terrifically surprising. A small molecule like resveratrol doesn't usually act as an allergen. The immune system is in the gut, but it's also everywhere else. Some areas (eyes, nose) see more activity than others, but it's all over the place.

Is it within the realm of possibility that the severe joint pain experienced by some upon exposure to resveratrol may be an allergic reaction? For example, some people have reported gradual sensitization initially and then rapid reactions upon subsequent exposure. Remember, resveratrol really is meant, by the plants that produce it, to be a toxin.

By the way, proteins are not the only allergens. Many people are allergic to small molecules, and even elemental substances such as metals.
