Just saw this article today and was wondering if there were any cool new twitter, facebook, or other social media tools that could identify "important" people.

Not really. The "big names" out there usually have their own fan pages anyway, and getting to their private Facebook page is usually impossible. Easiest method of contact is via real life, or befriending a good friend/worker of the person you are getting a hold of.

http://www.trendrr.com/

This application, Trendrr, appears to offer real-time analysis of social media conversations and topics. The "pro" version is expensive, but even the free
version could be useful.

Yet another application for monitoring conversations about specific topics, like Imminst, life extension, and what-not. Habit stream (and a youtube ad for the service) They have a free trial period - 30 days I think. Enough to evaluate its potential maybe. Not sure if we would want to pay for it every month but these tools could be quite valuable.

I'm a little skeptical about what this service actually offers, for the price. Just using the free Twitter search would probably yield a lot of the same results. The real, valuable
data is in knowing how to find 'influencers' and engage with them directly.

Twitter, along with the expanding Google search capabilities and what Facebook seems to offer could probably serve as a helpful spotlight. A beginning, anyway.
