What do you guys think? Sounds good on paper:

Neptune Krill Oil (NKO™) 1 g * Yielding:
Phospholipids, Omega-3 rich 400 mg *
Omega-3 fatty acids, total 300 mg *
Eicosapentaenoic aacid (EPA) 150 mg *
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) 90 mg *
Omega-6 fatty acids, total 20 mg *
Astaxanthin 1.5 mg

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid that is closely related to beta-carotene and Lutein. Because of its unique structure, astaxanthin provides a wide range of antioxidant benefits. Astaxanthin may play a key role in the protection of cell membranes against free radical attack. Astaxanthin is a natural concentrate of marine algae Haematococcus pulvialis, which is cultivated in the warm waters of Hawaii. Recent studies have indicated that astaxanthin is more powerful than its carotenoid cousin, beta-carotene, at trapping singlet oxygen free radicals.

Mercola is giving it a big plug..... better than LEF SUPER EPA/DHA W/SESAME LIGNANS& OLIVE FRUIT EXTRACT? Or maybe worthy of taking along with the LEF brand?

Not saying krill oil is no good, but I wouldn't trust Mercola too much, he mainly promotes products he sells or is affiliated to.

As far as I know if is just another source of EPA/DHA. Unless you're a veggie then it is the only (AFAIK) veggie source of EPA/DHA.

I take mostly fish oil + some krill for the Astaxanthin. NO clue if the touted benefits of krill over other fish oil are significant or hype, but doing it this way kills 2 birds with one stone. If I ate salmon regularly, or found another source of Astaxanthin not sure I'd bother.

heh. Guess I thought it was planckton (sp) but you're correct:

Krill (euphausiids) are small, shrimp-like crustaceans that swim in the seas

Quite rigth scottl, is smaller in size than a shrimp, found quite profusely in South Pacific cold waters, whales feed on them by the Antartic. I understand that it was also been produced as a paste for feeding on salmon farms in Southern Chile.

ASTAXANTHIN, a powerful antioxidant carotenoid obtained from microalgae, is found widely in nature including shellfish and salmon. It has no vitamin A value, but protects against lipid peroxidation that causes plaque formation up to 500 times that of vitamin E, traps more types of free radicals than any other antioxidant, is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, protects skin & eyes by quenching singlet and triplet oxygen, boosts the immune system, alleviates oxidative stress, prevents initiation of certain cancer cells, reduces abnormal cells in the liver, and increases muscular endurance 2.8 times compared with placebo in one human study. All with about 2-5mg/day with no side effects! Sold as 2% beadlet powder. 20 grams, $19.80. Code 100.3

Not to cut down our beloved BAC, but the price isn't that good. Swansons and NOW brand astaxanthin are cheaper.

2% of 20grams is pretty weak. I bought this a while ago thinking I was getting a deal until I realized it is only 400mg of product.

400mg may be enough. Does anyone know at what dose it becomes effective?

Came across a bottle of Neptune Krill Oil for cheap. I'm torn, the astaxanthin is nice - however low, at 0.45 mg per pill, and the DHA is fairly high at 127 mg per 500 mg gelcap. I already take Ascenta Nutrasea so this is most likely too much DHA for not enough astaxanthin (although I like getting it from a natural source).

Boily, anyone else taking this currently?

How much are those from questvitamins? It looks like they're only available to Canadians.

i've been taking krill oil from Mercola for almost a year now. I buy stuff from Mercola's site because he's the first Dr that introduced me to living healthy many years ago and his products seems to be high in quality, like the Whey Protein he sells.

Not taking it at the moment, although I'd like to. I am taking astaxanthin and high EPA fish oil, so I feel I'm somewhat covered, except for the phospholipids which get a good write up...

ironchet, can you attribute anything to taking the krill?

I feel that i am in the best health and physical shape of my life atm. havent' been sick, my seasonal allergy is completely gone, sleeps like a baby, etc.. unfortunately i can't credit the krill or any of the various supps/vitamines i've added in that same period because i simply have no way of knowing. I also added more workout days (from 2 to 5/wk of mostly weight training). In addition to that, i've been on optimum diet of low carb, organic vegetables, and quality protein. I'm due for a bloodwork next month so we'll see if my lipids panel has improved. as healthy as i was, my triglyceride level was unusually high at 396 mg/dl (normal is 150). i'll make sure to bump this thread when i get my result.
