Let me be the first to welcome you Tehra..
If I might ask... Do you have also an interest in physical immortality in addition to those you mention?

Yes, well, I figured that would be a given.
Vampiric Immortality was one of my main childhood fascinations, and still is. My interest in physical immortality hsa stemmed from this, I believe.

Sorry, when you listed religion, theology, and dharma it reminded me of some who have come here with a more positive view towards death than you might have otherwise expected.
I was hooked on the occult when I was a kid as well.. something about being able to break out of the bonds of natural law has always been attractive to me..
I used to read everything I could on vampires, werewolves, magic etc.. and then I found alcohol.. now that was magic that REALLY worked... for a while anyways..

I have read almost every Anne Rice book. The Vampire Lestat is one of my favorite books; truly an epic adventure. I'm not gothic or anything, but Rice's style of writing truly captivates me. When I use to read a lot of her, I would often feel as if her writing transported me to another world. In my mind, this is a sign of a truly great writer.
Welcome,

I married a younger woman and got into Buffy, does this count? Hey Tehra, many people left in New Zealand? You all seem to be over here! (Australia) What's an OOBE?
tehra

An OOBE is an out of body experience. I'm pretty much geared towards attaining Godhead, or at the very least, tapping the entire potential of my physical and spiritual self. That's why I've taken up Wing Chun, spend alot of time meditating and trying various methods of developing things like ESP, psychokinesis etc etc... Call me a dreamer, but the idea of living solely to work, marry retire and die does NOT appeal to me at all.
"We are born to succeed in what we die for" is the motto most people unknowingly adhere to nowadays, but not I!

Welcome. Don't be afraid to step on people's toes around here with any of your ideas. Nobody else is.

I'm not afraid to. However, the only way people's toes will be trodden on is if they have closed minds.

Have you experienced an OOBE? If so, how does one go about it, and have there been any post OOBE effects?
Working, by the way is good, as long as you work at something meaningfull TO YOU SPECIFICALLY. No point being a plumber, accountant, Prime Minister if it doesn't fulfill you. If you pick sometning that fulfills you, you're already retired! I was retired from 23 to 35, playing in heavy metal bands. Now I'm retired, doing a double degree in Psychology and Business.....

Another New Zealander! Is New Zealand a fairly advanced and free-thinking society in your view? I am looking for a place free from the tyanny of Socialism.

New Zealanders are horribly materialistic, and prone to blowing little things out of proportion. For example: An aquatic car was recently unveiled in the UK. Big news to New Zealanders? No. Certainly not front page... But wait! An ex-New Zealander was involved in the design process. Front page! We constantly get thrashed by other sports teams, and the details get relegated to the back page of the sports section, but when we finally manage to beat Australia at say a rugby game, it's splashed all over everything for like a week. And our ruling body of government are a bunch of stupid petty nitpickers. The National party tried to depose our Prime Minister because she signed a painting that she did not paint. That is how pathetic this country is. Oh, and unlike most New Zealanders: I hate sport, I hate NZ music, and my "Kiwi-Spirit" (which is more kindness in the name of chicness) is somewhat lacking. I hate this country, but you can get away with anything here.

Doesn't New Zealand have quite an extensive welfare state that caters a lot to the indigenous Maoris.
I know New Zealand has its problems but it does have beautiful scenery.

Welcome Tehra,
Does the lucid dreaming trick really work? If so you got a good website for it? You have many uncommon interests. I'm sure you will have unique views on some of the topics.

I'm still in training in regards to lucid dreaming, OOBE's etc. Sometimes I "go lucid", other times I do not. But my dream recollection is great now, and I am performing regular reality checks (apparently necessary for succesful lucidity). I pseudo-adhere to the theory that we are all living in a dream reality, and so I'm starting to focus on becoming lucid in the real world (manipulating time/space), I just think that it's VERY hard to let go of material existence, and that is why I haven't succeeded yet. Love is the biggest barrier.

Oh, and don't refer to it as a "lucid dreaming trick".

Ok... I told my girlfriend today about my immortalist views, this online community and what we are striving towards. Her reaction was along the lines of: "Oh my God! That is seriously like, the tool of Satan! John Travolta is into all that same thing, and it's all really sick and cultish!"
To which I earnestly replied: "It's not a cult, it's a group of like-minded people from around the world striving for the same goal," but to little avail. Normally she is quite open minded, eg she knows I am into self hypnosis, lucid dream training, very heavily interested in most religions but for some reason I think I hit on a bad nerve when I brought up immortality? She doesn't know anything about Singularity, Nanotechnology, Occulta, etc etc, yet it was almost as if I offended her by bringing it up. [angry] Women huh?!?

For what it is worth we are not anything related to L. Ron Hubbard or Scientology either. In fact we have more than a few members that are "persona non grati" among that group. It is commonly very difficult to have rational discussions about these issues. Too often it is like trying to have one about race, religion, sex, or politics because while most people like to see themselves as tolerant and open minded in practice they tend to fall far short of their self image.
We are addressing some of the most hot button issues that effect humanity and it is no wonder that we trigger all manner of extreme response. Try discussing eugenics and not having a political discussion, try discussing a rational treatment approach to AIDS and not having to analyze the limits of health care and civil liberty.
What people confuse is rationalizing for the process of reason and the initial response is all to often a visceral one that seeks to support itself but after a while the pragmatic realities set in and problems don't go away because we don't like them so the questions keep rising to the surface like bloated corpses.
It reminds me of what one highly and intelligent women who happened to be very mechanically inclined once told me was her first method of addressing a problem with her car, she said:
"It is very important to me that the car stereo is always working well because the first thing I do when I hear a funny noise coming from the car is to turn the volume up so the problem goes away."
She was not being intentionally dumb, she was being quixotically satirical because she was fully conscious of the fact this was a generally useless policy and potentially self defeating but it was also very self-satisfying at times as it allowed her to get beyond fixating on every little problem.
