I have read up on Provigil and Nuvigil and it sounds like a good drug to take for shift work. I'm really nervous about asking my local doctor for a prescription for it though. Should I be? I have a feeling he will be skeptical.

Has anyone on here been to the doctor and asked to try this. If so what was your experience like?

My wife went through this. They think of it as speed and they will likely focus on it as a drug of possible abuse. I suggest you get quality information to show that it is not speed and that it is appropriate for night shift disorder. Highlight the important things that support your argument. Then if you are given a hard time, you can get the papers out.

It's a scheduled drug along with amphetamines. My doctor would not prescribe it without a neurological workup so that a neurologist prescribed it, and the insurance requires re-authorization every time I refill the prescription. It's a real pain in the ass for the doctor, and if he prescribes too many scheduled goodies he can get unwanted attention from law enforcement. There was a pan-management doctor in North Carolina who was convicted of trafficing for prescribing too many hydrocodone.

The fact that you are doing shift-work should justify things for the doc. A lot depends on your relationship with him, and his attitude toward you as a patient.
