Procedures

All Navigators are asked to create a log to record any significant moderating action. The posts should include the specific actions taken, the reasoning behind the action, and a link to and copy of the edited material (where appropriate). Routine actions such as editing individual posts, acting upon reported posts, removing topics/posts do not require meticulous recording as the actions are logged and easily tracked. When editing individual posts, you should include the reasoning behind the edit in that post.

When editing the post of a member, please send a PM as notification of your actions.

Navigators are free to moderate any forum other than Free Speech. Free Speech is only to be moderated if the post/thread is against U.S. law or the ImmInst User Agreement specific to the Free Speech Forum. Be sure to log any action taken in that forum.

The moderation duties of a Navigator include but may not be limited to the following:

1. Following through with posts reported by members 2. Removing spam posts and warning the offender thought PM 3. Stepping in to minimize ad hominem or libelous attacks between posters (including members of leadership)) 4. Splitting off-topic posts to new threads when appropriate 5. Ensuring that topics are in the appropriate forum 6. Merging redundant topics 7. Removing redundant topics/posts created by the same posters in different forums 8. Removing off-topic posts should be left up to the discretion of the Navigator, in the exception of threads specifically labeled as adhering to the CIRA standards. Moderation should be taken to ensure they follow the CIRA guidelines. 9. Navigators should use their own judgment in situations involving profanity. 10. Hate speech of any kind should be moderated and the offender should be made aware of the reasoning 11. Threads should be locked if any pertinent discussion has ceased and they are ripe for personal attacks. Threads that are obviously redundant may also be locked, especially in the Health section, with a post linking to a relevant discussion. 12. When a poster breaks one of the forum rules, please increase his/her warning level and notify the poster. We should use this as an official tally of warnings, and not merely warning the user if we don't like him/her.

If a member has repeatedly disrupted the forums within a year from the first warning to the point where three warnings have been given, a suspension from posting of no longer than seven days is appropriate upon the next infraction. Please log your action. A second suspension of up to 1 month is appropriate if his/her actions continue to be disruptive after the initial suspension. If the poster continues to disrupt the forums after the second suspension is over, please bring a motion to the rest of the leadership for a longer suspension or official ban. In the case of accounts created by commercial spammers, an immediate removal off all posting abilities permanently is appropriate.

Members of leadership are to be held to the same guidelines as all other posters. The first action should be a PM to the leader that is acting inappropriately. If the leader continues in a fashion unbecoming of the position, please create a thread in the Leadership forum for discussion of his/her actions.

Navigators should limit any supplier discussion that is not a sponsor of ImmInst. Personal judgment should be used in informing offenders and follow-up actions.

Moderating options specific to the new software can be found here.

Users that are suspect and should been watched closely can be included in this topic.
